Chapter Eight

When Spence had first embarked on this weekend wedding party, he’d hoped to hold one woman in his arms: Thea, and only Thea. But he’d had to carry Jenny down from the opposite tower room, and now he found himself carrying the conked-out Dr. Mona Nance in his arms from the tower bedroom to the nursery suite. Without fully waking, Mona reached up and patted his cheek. “You’re a good boy, Spencer.”

“Thanks.” Little old ladies and seven-year-old Brownies adored him. Please God, Thea too.

“Where are we going?” she chirped.

“To the headquarters we set up in the nursery suite.” The center of the castle on the second floor. In her drunken stupor, Mona clearly remembered little of what he’d said in the kitchen. Spence reminded her. “We’re all going to spend the night there. Together.”

A loopy smile curved her features. “Oh, goodie. An orgy.”

“Jeez, I hope not.” The idea of group sex would be enough to give Reverend Joshua Handy an aneurysm. The tall, gaunt man of the cloth didn’t look like he’d ever indulged in pleasures of the flesh. And, if he had, he surely hadn’t enjoyed himself.

In the large sitting room, Spence gently placed Mona on one of the matching flowered sofas and tucked a pillow under her head. The others had already staked out their places.

Travis was stretched out on a window seat where he occasionally cupped his hands around his eyes and peered outside, before giving a repetitious weather report. “Still snowing. Real hard.”

The reverend crouched in a velvet wingback chair with a footstool covered in needlepoint. He was nearest the blazing fireplace and had pushed up his sleeves. His skinny, almost hairless white arms laced like pipe cleaners across his narrow chest.

Lawrence had made himself comfortable by dragging in a twin-sized mattress and comforter from one of the other bedrooms. He had shed his sports jacket, no longer bothering to hide his shoulder holster and handgun.

Thea emerged from the adjoining bedroom where they’d set up Jenny’s gurney.

“How’s Jenny doing?” Spence asked her.

“She looks peaceful.” She beckoned to him. “Why don’t you come here and take a look.”

He crossed the room as Travis unnecessarily reported, “It’s a damn blizzard out there.” The wind could be easily heard through the thick castle walls.

Inside the enormous nursery bedroom there were two double beds with colorful alphabet comforters, matched by a ceiling border of the ABCs. Attached to one wall was a huge chalkboard.

Spence noted that Travis and the reverend had followed instructions and shoved an enormous dresser against the hallway door to prevent Rosemont from sneaking inside—using a key to unlock the outer door. The three-room suite—bedroom, sitting room and bath—should be completely impregnable once the armoire in the sitting room was moved to block that entrance as well.

Spence leaned over Jenny’s gurney, which stood beside a waist-high wooden slide in the shape of an elephant. He made a routine check of the IV drip, then of Jenny’s vital signs and reflexes. For an instant, there seemed to be movement behind her eyelids.
